I decided to conduct holiday interviews, where the students would be the interviewers and interviewees. I gave them a sheet with questions to ask their partner and I demonstrated, with the classroom teacher's help, how to prompt the respondent for more information. The classroom teacher and I role played the activity and then we handed out the sheets and let the students have 35mins to complete their interviews.
The students were all quickly in deep conversation and they acted out the roles of the reporter very well. The teacher and I gave assistance in the area of writing to a few students, but they remained in the role of reporter asking the questions.
These sheets were then returned to the interviewee and they will be used by the interviewee to write their postcard. This activity was good for a number of reasons. Firstly, it allowed every student some time to talk about their holiday and to be heard by another person. Secondly, it made the students really listen carefully as they had to record answers and prompt for further detail, and finally, it helped them sort out all of their ideas about their holiday prior to the writing activity.
The students really enjoyed this activity and I can't wait to see how their postcards turn out.
I will attach the worksheet we used.
